Picatinny rail for Ruger

Sturm, Ruger & Co. was founded in 1949 by William B. Ruger and Alexander McCormick Sturm in Southport, Connecticut. Sturm died of a heart attack in 1951, just two years after the founding, but William Ruger continued and built the company into one of the best-selling firearms manufacturers in the USA. Today, Ruger is known for reliable and affordable rifles for a wide segment of users. The product portfolio is broad – from rimfire .22 LR to heavy magnum calibers – and this is reflected in the range on this page: Ruger 10/22 and Ruger American are fundamentally different rifles that only share a brand. Ruger also acquired Marlin Firearms in 2020 and has resumed production of Marlin's classic lever action models.

Ruger 10/22 – rimfire with its own universe

The Ruger 10/22 is one of the most popular rimfire rifles in the world and has a huge market for accessories and customization. It is a rimfire platform in .22 LR, and the Picatinny rail for the 10/22 sits on the upper surface of the receiver with its own hole spacing. Many variants of the 10/22 exist, including limited editions and factory modifications – check that your version uses standard 10/22 hole spacing before choosing a rail.

For the 10/22, aluminum is the natural material choice: lightweight, sufficient for .22 LR, and keeps the total weight of the compact system down. Digital optics and thermal equipment are increasingly used on rimfire platforms for night use – the Picatinny standard provides flexibility to change optic types without changing the base.

Ruger American SA+LA

The Ruger American is a newer centerfire bolt action introduced in 2012 – an affordable and versatile hunting rifle available in Short Action and Long Action. The designation SA+LA on this page means that both versions are represented, and the two are not compatible in rail selection. The Ruger American Predator and Ruger American Ranch are variants of the same platform and essentially use the same mounting geometry.

Confirm the action designation on your Ruger American, and use the A/B/C control measurementsfor the final check. The specific difference between short and long action is explained in the guide on short action vs. long action.

Night optics and flexible setup

The Ruger American is used in many contexts – from hunting to lighter use with digital or thermal optics. The Picatinny standard offers flexibility here: the same type of mounts can be used with traditional scopes and other optic types. Thermal clip-on optics and digital night optics require a stable and standardized rail for proper mounting.

Material and use scenario

For the Ruger American for hunting, aluminum is appropriate. Steel is relevant if the rifle is used for intensive range use or carries heavy optics. The material difference is described in the guide on steel vs. aluminum for Picatinny. Mounting requires threadlocker and torque control – the procedure is in the mounting guide.

Thoroughly check the model and action type before ordering. The Ruger 10/22 and Ruger American are two fundamentally different platforms and each requires its own rail. A/B/C measurements are the final confirmation.
